Temporary shortcuts

Temporary shortcuts are for apps or windows you need now but do not want in your permanent setup.

  1. Focus the app or window you want.
  2. Hold Hyper until the Quick Layout preview is visible.
  3. Press an unused app key.

HyperSwitcher closes the preview and confirms the new Hyper + key shortcut. The preview must be visible before an unused key can become a temporary shortcut. Press Escape, Backspace, or Forward Delete to cancel.

Fixed layout controls cannot become temporary shortcuts. This includes Zero, Minus, and the physical Equals/Plus key used for centering and resizing.

Open Settings → General → Temporary shortcuts and choose a target:

Target What the key returns to
Focused window The exact window that was focused when you assigned it. This is the default, and it can restore that window if it is minimized.
Focused app The current app process, using the same window-selection behavior as a saved app shortcut.

Use Focused window for one exact destination, or Focused app for normal window selection and repeat-press cycling.

  • An app shortcut disappears when that app quits.
  • A window shortcut disappears when HyperSwitcher can no longer find the window or its app quits.

Temporary and saved shortcuts share the same active app-shortcut limit. If limited mode is already at its maximum, or every supported key is in use, Quick Layout will not offer a temporary shortcut.

An app can have both a saved shortcut and a temporary shortcut as long as the keys do not conflict.
