Moving a Workspace

Switch your setup when you dock.

Use one set of shortcuts and layout preferences at your desk and another on the go. On a MacBook, HyperSwitcher can switch profiles automatically when an external display is connected or disconnected.

Automatic profile switching

Set it up in HyperSwitcher.

Start with the window or app you reach for most.

  1. Enable window layouts

Install HyperSwitcher and allow Accessibility access. In Settings → Layout, turn on Enable Layouts. Connect a second display and use an extended desktop so each display has its own workspace.

  2. Focus the window you want to move

Click the window or reach it with an app shortcut. Hold your Hyper key. With the built-in Caps Lock setup, this means holding Caps Lock.

  3. Press Tab to move to the next display

Before pressing any arrow keys, press Tab to move the window to the next display at its current size. Release Hyper when you are finished. Repeat to continue through your displays.

A few useful details.

Does this work with a MacBook and an external monitor?

Yes, when macOS exposes them as separate displays in an extended desktop. Mirroring shows the same desktop on both screens, so it does not provide a separate destination for a window.

Does Tab move the window or the layout preview?

Before you choose a region with an arrow key, Tab moves the window at its current size. After you choose a region, Tab moves the preview. Release Hyper to apply that placement.

Why might a window refuse to move or resize?

HyperSwitcher needs Accessibility permission and Layouts enabled. Some apps restrict their window size or movement, and native full-screen windows may need to leave full screen before you can place them on the desktop.

Try it with your own windows.

Download HyperSwitcher and set up your first shortcut.
